Illinois State Requirements
Cosmetologist licensees shall expire September 30th of each odd numbered year. Nail technicians shall expire October 31 of each even numbered year. A pre--renewal period is the 24 month period proceeding September 30 in the year of renewal. Cosmetologists Certify on the renewal application to successful completion of a minimum of 14 hours of continuing education and nail techs a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education from a cosmetology sponsor registered with the Division, in accordance with Section 1175.1200 of this Part, within the 2 years prior to the expiration date of the license. Half of the required continuing education hours can be acquired via online or correspondence.

Course Description
The course is designed for use by cosmetologists (hairstylists, manicurists, barbers and others as defined by local statute) who might come into contact with blood or other body fluids during the course of their workday. Topics covered include an overview of HIV and AIDS, how it is spread, prevention of HIV, Universal Precautions (barrier protection, disinfection, personal cleanliness, other bacterial, viral and fungal infections, sterilization & disinfection, distinguishes between disinfectant and antiseptic, sanitation of hands, tools and other equipment and covers requirements for salon ventilation and cleanliness.
Learning Objectives
- Know the hazards of blood borne pathogens.
- Know strategies for avoiding/preventing contamination by blood borne pathogens
- Know how blood borne pathogens are spread.
- Know strategies for disposal of contaminated materials such as piercing needles, cotton strips, etc.
- Know strategies for sterilizing and sanitizing various “sharp” instruments such as cutting blades, tweezers, shears, etc.
- Know strategies for disposal of biological wastes, used “sharps”, etc.
- Know strategies for preventing bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

- Know how these infections are spread.

If you are a cosmetologist or esthetician in Illinois the
license renewal deadline is September 30
Prior to your license renewal you are required to complete the following cosmetology continuing education:
Cosmetologists - 14 hours
Estheticians - 10 hours
Nail Technicians - 10 hours
Illinois licensees can take half of their cosmetology ce courses online.
The state licensing division will send postcards for the renewal late July for cosmetologists and about the 1st week of August for estheticians. If your address has changed, go to https://www.idfpr.com/DPR/CHG_INFO/DEFAULT.asp to update your address with the licensing division. The license renewal fee is $50 and there is a $10 late fee if you miss the deadline.
